Cath Lab 160 km Cycle Ride
Supporting the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Cath Lab Project
On Sunday August 30, I will be cycling over 160 km to raise funds towards this important life saving Cath Lab project at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN).
As always, I am so appreciative of the support I receive for these annual charity rides that I do. And while helping raise funds for these important causes is likely reason enough, I know some of you also want to make sure I suffer at least a little for your support! Therefore, rest assured, this 160k route will take care of that!

Why I'm fundraising
I have been invited to participate in the Cath Lab 160 km Cycle Ride on August 30th supporting the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) Cardiac Catheterization Lab Project. The fundraising goal for this initiative is more than $10 million, and thanks to tremendous community support, over half of that target has already been raised.
The Challenge
WRHN currently performs more than 20 cardiac procedures each day, making it one of the busiest cardiac programs in the province. For perspective, large tertiary care centres such as St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto perform roughly 9 procedures per day within their cardiac program. Given the population served and the increasing procedural demand, two cath labs are just not sufficient.
The objective, therefore, is to have a third fully operational cath lab open by Spring 2027, followed by the renovation of one of the existing labs, resulting in three fully functional labs by 2028.
With three labs operating, WRHN will be better positioned to:
- Keep pace with growing cardiac care volumes
- Reduce wait times for critical procedures
- Prevent dangerous regional backlogs
- Save lives through faster cardiac intervention
I participate in these rides for a few reasons: to help those facing health challenges, to celebrate the good fortune of being healthy enough to contribute, and to challenge myself in a meaningful way. This year's ride certainly checks all of those boxes.
The cause is also a bit personal for me. A close friend of mine unexpectedly suffered a heart attack two years ago at the age of 62 and required the expertise and care provided through the catheterization lab. I'm happy to report that he has made an excellent recovery and is back on the bike. Together, along with several other local cyclists, we will be riding a challenging 160-kilometre route (to "earn" any donations we receive lol).
And while supporting such an important cause is likely reason enough, I know some of you also want to make sure I suffer at least a little for your support! Rest assured, this 160k route will take care of that 🙂
