Scotland’s Yard Road Hockey Classic raises
nearly $300K in fifth year

The fifth annual Scotland's Yard Road Hockey Classic drew more than 3,000 people to The Boardwalk on Sat., July 11, raising $286,000 for pediatric equipment at Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN).
Six-year-old Josiah stood with a ball in his hand, nine rinks and thousands of people around him, ready to open WRHN Foundation's fifth annual Scotland's Yard Road Hockey Classic.
Not long ago, Josiah’s family had to drive to the GTA for frequent heart appointments. On July 11, Josiah kicked off a tournament built to make sure kids like him don’t have to leave his community for care.
Over the last five years, players, pros, WRHN team members, patients, families, and neighbours, have participated in the Scotland’s Yard Road Hockey Classic for the same reason: keeping kids' care close to home.
The tournament netted more than $1 million over its first four years.
“When your child is dealing with a health issue, the last thing you need is a long drive to another city,” says Doug Earle, CEO of the WRHN Foundation. “What you need is access to care in your own community, so you can focus on your child’s health.

It started with Scottie
Scotland (Scottie) Santos was three months old when she was diagnosed with a rare cancer that required years of treatment in Hamilton.
That travel burden sparked the idea for the Scotland’s Yard campaign after a conversation between Scottie’s mom, Joy Stewart, and friends Jackie Sieber and Carol Channer. Together, they approached WRHN Foundation.
The hockey tournament, co-chaired by one of Joy’s best friends Jacqueline Chiarot and her husband, Detroit Red Wings defenceman Ben Chiarot, has helped fund significant equipment and kids programming needs at WRHN, including a PET-CT scanner expected to go live in 2027.
Today, Scottie is six. And the event created in her name keeps growing.

Thank you, fundraising teams
This year, 82 teams played while more than 3,000 people packed the rinks, bought merchandise, bid in the online auction, and cheered.
Steed and Evans took home the top adult fundraising prize for the fifth straight year, raising nearly $29,000. The top kids fundraising team was 6 Rangers and a Badger, raising just over $5,000.
Pros and alumni, including Mike Hoffman, Loren Gabel, Adam Graves, Tanner Pearson, and Gabe Chiarot coached and played on teams, signed autographs, and posed for selfies. The Kitchener Rangers brought their OHL Championship Cup – a major selfie attraction throughout the day.
Every dollar raised at the tournament went towards a new pediatric echocardiogram, an ultrasound machine that lets doctors see a child's heart clearly, without needles, radiation, or pain.
WRHN’s pediatric cardiac clinic, opened in 2024, has one echocardiogram. It needs a second to keep up with demand, ensuring tests happen sooner, treatment starts faster, and families skip the trips out of the region.
