University of Waterloo researchers partner with the Waterloo Regional Health Network to improve outcomes for stroke patients

Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) team members are working together with researchers at the University of Waterloo to advance stroke care across our community and improve outcomes for patients.
A new study led by UWaterloo brought together experts from the university’s management science and engineering department and stroke teams at WRHN to identify workflow barriers that contribute to treatment delays.
The study analyzed 218 acute stroke cases over a three-year period in Waterloo Region. By combining analytics, process improvement and front-line clinical expertise, the results showed how researchers and healthcare teams can work together to improve care.
“The clinical teams across WRHN are exceptional, and their commitment to delivering high-quality stroke care is evident every day,” Dr. Stephen Giilck, Joint Chief of Medicine for WRHN and Medical Director of the Waterloo Wellington Stroke Program, told Sam Charles at the University of Waterloo.
This partnership and the results of the study will give us an opportunity to build on that strong foundation by identifying ways to better connect the pieces of the care journey, strengthen what is already working well, and ultimately make an excellent system even better for our patients.
